Estimating operating speed for county road segments – Evidence from Italy

چکیده
• Operating speed is used to check road design and posted limits consistency. Usually, the 85° percentile of operating (V 85 ) considered as crucial. V estimated a function functional features. New parameters are included estimate , compared past literature. Considering Province Brescia (Italy), two models calibrated tested. Vehicle crucial factor for safety, it strictly affects occurrence severity crashes. 85th distributions (i.e., in free-flow traffic condition widely accepted base value consistency evaluation homogenous portion existing roads. Although computation simple, many authorities cannot collect data each road. Therefore, providing prediction could be useful tool investigate relationship between characteristics. The literature proposed several account it. However, best our knowledge, effects some geometric characteristics, markings signs, data, type terrain simultaneous consideration different categories on were not completely analyzed. This paper fills this gap by isolating key variables that mostly affect . In doing so, 60 000+ car spot collected along county network province then processed multiple regression models. main findings show increases owing presence wider or paved shoulder, visible median markings, higher number lanes percentage cars with respect total flow. Conversely, decreases axis curvature, accesses rate forbidden overtaking increase. addition, external surrounding mountainous contribute decreasing overall may support verify roads’ conditions and, possibly, adjust limits, especially

Developing a Model for Estimating Weaving and Non-Weaving Speed within Highways Weaving Segments (Tehran)
In weaving section due to a strong need for lane changing, a type of turbulence is created in traffic flow; so, the speedand the capacity of the weaving section decreases. Therefore, investigation of the weaving section is very important. However, due to shortage of the manual for urban principal arterials (highways), calibration of these models is necessary. One of these models...

متن کاملNew geometric design consistency model based on operating speed profiles for road safety evaluation.
To assist in the on-going effort to reduce road fatalities as much as possible, this paper presents a new methodology to evaluate road safety in both the design and redesign stages of two-lane rural highways. This methodology is based on the analysis of road geometric design consistency, a value which will be a surrogate measure of the safety level of the two-lane rural road segment. The consis...
متن کاملReducing injury from speed related road crashes.
W hile speed management is a key element in the road safety strategies of many regional and national governments, there is little consensus and much controversy over the specific speed reduction interventions that have been employed. Considerable heat—and relatively little light—has accompanied the public debates. This paper reviews the evidence for a population based speed reduction strategy, ...
